Introducing Star Circle, a New Logic Puzzle on Puzzle Lair
We just added a new puzzle type to Puzzle Lair, and it is one of our favorites yet. Say hello to Star Circle, a binary grid logic puzzle for players who enjoy Takuzu, Tango, or any game that rewards careful row by column reasoning.
What Is Star Circle?
Star Circle is played on a grid where every cell needs to hold one of two symbols, a star or a circle. The rules are simple to learn but the solving gets satisfyingly tricky as the grid fills in.
The rules:
- Fill every cell with a star or a circle.
- Never place three matching symbols in a row or column.
- Every row and column must have the same number of stars and circles.
- An
=between two cells means they share the same symbol. A×between two cells means they use opposite symbols.
That last rule is where Star Circle earns its own identity. The = and × constraints between neighboring cells add a layer of deduction that pushes you past simple counting and into real chain logic, tracing what one placed symbol forces onto its neighbors.
How to Solve It
Start by looking for cells that are already forced. If two cells in a row already share the same symbol, a third cell completing three in a row is not allowed, so you can rule that symbol out immediately. Watch the row and column counts too. Once a row has half its cells filled with stars, every remaining cell in that row has to be a circle.
The = and × links between cells are your best deduction tool. Follow them across the board. A single confirmed star can ripple out through a chain of = and × links and lock in several other cells before you have to guess anything.
Why We Built It
Star Circle sits alongside Takuzu style puzzles as a genre, but the addition of the = and × link constraints gives it a different solving rhythm from the pure counting puzzles you may already know from other sites. We wanted a puzzle on Puzzle Lair that rewards pattern chains the way Tango does, while keeping the core two symbol simplicity that makes this style of puzzle so approachable for newcomers.
Try It Now
Star Circle is live on Puzzle Lair today, with easy, medium, and hard difficulties to work through. It also supports both the Check mode and the Instant mode, so you can play at whatever pace suits you. Note that this puzzle type is in beta, so if you run into anything unexpected while playing, we would love to hear about it.
Head to the puzzle catalog and give Star Circle a try. If you like Takuzu or Tango, this one is going to feel like home, with a few new tricks to learn along the way.
